Mastic Asphalt
Mastic Asphalt provides the ultimate waterproofing solution. It offers total waterproofing for roofing and tanking, acts as a tough, durable working surface and damp-proof membrane for paving. With its seamless application and advanced formulations, Mastic Asphalt is the finest material for flat roofs, vehicle decks, balconies, external steps, walkways and green roof systems/roof gardens. The product has stood the test of time, out-performing almost every other type of industrial and domestic flooring material.
Asphalt areas (internally & externally) should be assessed twice-yearly. Particular attention should be given to abutments, joints, gutters, outlets, kerbs, skirtings & turndowns. Blistering, slumps and distortion can occur due to movement and impact.
Frequently asked questions:
What is the minimum fall required for a mastic asphalt roof?
Answer: The minimum finished fall is 1:80, however, the design fall should be 1:40. Mastic Asphalt can be laid flat on inverted roofs but under these circumstances the thickness of the asphalt should be increased from 20mm to 30mm.
What separating layer should I use between the asphalt and the deck?
Answer: A separating layer needs to be used to isolate the asphalt from movement in the substrate. The separation is provided by a black sheathing felt, which is laid loose with 50mm lap joints.
I have asphalt steps outside my house that are blistering – what could be causing this?
Answer: Asphalt being black absorbs solar gain and undergoes extreme changes in temperature and some movement throughout the year. Blistering however is normally caused by trapped moisture which vaporises under heat. The vaporisation creates pressure and the hot and therefore soft asphalt which blisters.
