High Performance Membranes
There are a huge variety of different roofing membrane systems, from single ply to one, two, three or five layered systems each with a large variation in quality and life expectancy. Through close partnerships with trade associations and manufacturers, Tecta Roofing are able to provide a complete service from site survey and installation, to the issue of an insurance backed, materials and workmanship guarantee for either 5, 10, 15, 20 years.
Tecta Roofing are able to offer many of these systems, as we have been vetted and are approved installers of the membrane manufacturers, who are keen to ensure the systems are laid by trained professionals. Please visit Accreditations.
High Performance Membranes are very popular for flat roofs, such as garages, porches and house extensions. They are strong and seamless. They normally consist of timber decking fixed to roof joists and covered with 3 layers of high performance membrane (felt), sometimes with an insulation layer.
Frequently asked questions:
How long will a High Performance Built-up Membrane (felt) roof last for?
Answer:They can last from 5 – 30 years, depending on the materials/roofing systems used and the quality of the installer/tradesman. Tecta Roofing can provide anything from a 5, 10, 15, 20 year guarantees – depending on the system you choose.
I have noticed condensation in my roof space – how can I prevent this?
Answer: Effective ventilation will help prevent condensation. This is especially important with flat roofs.
What are the benefits of a flat roof?
Answer:There are many benefits of flat roofs. High Performance Membrane roofs are value for money, three layers of protection provides confidence for the client in regard to the waterproofing integrity of the roof, they are easy to install & low maintenance.
Can you use insulation together with a flat roof system?
Answer: Re-roofing often provides a good opportunity to insulate. With flat roofs one of the most efficient ways of doing this is to use a dense insulation board sandwiched between the layers of the roofing system. This has three benefits:
- It improves the environment within the building
- It keeps the roof structure 'warm' and reduces expansion and contraction which extends the life of the new roof system.
- It prevents condensation forming in the roof void that could otherwise cause timber decay and also blisters in the roofing felt which would lead to failure. Warm roofs do not need to be ventilated.
Why do some flat roof have loose stones on the surface?
Answer: Loose stones are used to protect the roof membrane from the sun. The sun can damage the high performance membrane over long periods of time. Solar Reflective paint can also be added to reflect the sunlight and therefore protect the top layer membrane. Tecta Roofing use High Performance Membranes that have a mineral finish – this means that one side of the felt is bituminous – enabling the installer to use a gas-gun and torch-on the membrane to the roof surface. The top side of the membrane has tiny minerals embedded into the membrane to reflect the sunlight – therefore there is no need for loose stones.
